Sin and Accountability

This morning on WayFM, Wally said God forgives you the moment you ask.

There is no direct verse that says this, so what does the Bible say concerning sin:

1 John 1:9 KJV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

You can certainly ask God for forgiveness, but can you truly confess to God, who already knows everything? I think confession is to another person, whether priest, spouse, friend, or acquaintance. In addiction programs they call this an accountability partner. If you’re embarrassed to confess your sins to another, maybe that embarrassment will keep you from being a habitual sinner. It may even save your soul.

The Bible also says charity covers a multitude of sins. In 1 Peter 4:8 KJV,
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

My own personal definition of charity is love in action.

The Bible also says in James 5:20 KJV.
Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

This is high incentive to preach the Gospel and tell others about Christ the Messiah, who died on the cross for our sins.

Why does all this matter?  Hebrews 10:26 KJV says, For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins… .

If we want forgiveness we need to apply all these things in our lives and strive against continuing in sin.

See Proverbs 28:13 KJV.
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Better Man

Thank goodness the gospel isn’t about working harder or getting better.

The Gospel is not about working harder. What does the Bible say?

James 1:22 KJV
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1 John 3:8-9 KJV
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin… .

A central doctrine of the Gospel is to strive hard against sin.

The Gospel is not about getting better.

1 Corinthians 15:3 KJV
… Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures… .

Isaiah 53:5 KJV
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

1 John 1:7 KJV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Another central doctrine of the Gospel is that Jesus died for our sins. He died teaching us how to follow the Heavenly Father and indeed how to be better men and women.

Fearless

One of the ladies on WayFM offered a short sermon during the morning show. She proceeded to tell the listeners that fear of God means respect and awe similar to the way we feel about the Grand Canyon.

I tell you no. Fear means fear.

Philippians 2:12 KJV … work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Matthew 10:28 KJV And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Fear of the second death helps keep me on the straight and narrow. If you’re a sinner may I suggest fear first, in addition to holding God in respect and awe.

If you truly want to be fearless, love God and keep his Commandments.

1 John 4:18 KJV There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Iniquity

Andrew Wommack was recently preaching that you can live in sin and still go to Heaven. In order to preach this he had to change the definition of death, making it seem something not very serious.

I tell you when it says the wages of sin is death, it means it. It means both spiritual and physical death. The Lord will destroy both spirit and body in Hell. He will ask all workers of iniquity to depart from him. In Matthew 7:23 KJV Jesus said, And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Hebrews 10:26-27 KJV says, For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, [27] But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

On WayFM they preach that it is impossible to live perfectly. Yet, Jesus came to teach us how to walk perfectly before the Lord God Almighty.

Luke 1:37 KJV says, For with God nothing shall be impossible. Jesus will help if you remember to call upon him. Is it possible to live perfectly for 5 minutes, for 5 hours? Why not 5 days or 5 years? With God perfection or following the law with love is possible!

Trophy of Grace

I recently started listening to a Christian radio station called wayfm. A few weeks ago, the DJ gave a short sermon on being a trophy of grace versus being a leader of moral righteousness. He maintained he was not an example of righteousness, but only a trophy of grace.

His error. These aren’t antonyms they are synonyms. To be a trophy of grace, to be saved, you must of necessity be righteous.

What does the Bible say: 1 John 3:6-8 KJV Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. [7] Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. [8] He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

To be a trophy of grace we must have a part in God. To have that part we must not sin. Not sinning makes us an example of righteousness.

Luke 21:36 KJV
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and stand before the Son of man.
