The Greatest Thing

The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to love and be loved in return. – Moulin Rouge

Perhaps you’ve heard many a modern preacher say, there is nothing you can do to make God love you any less and there is nothing you can do to make God love you anymore.

I think the above statement is truly perpetuated by people who don’t understand love. In John 14:15 God said, If you love me keep my commandments.

Love is most often reciprocated to those who have love. It’s a natural response. In fact, James 4:8 says, Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.

In 2 Corinthians 6:17-18 KJV, God tells us how to become closer to him, Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, [18] And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

If you want to be loved by God, love him. Be separate and touch not the unclean thing, sin not and he will literally accept you as his son or daughter.

Jesus added in Matthew 12:50 KJV, For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

In Mark 12:29-30 KJV, Jesus said, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: [30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. Jesus continues in Mark 12:31 KJV, And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

God will love you more, if you do what he asks and continue in righteousness. He will even be your family. However, he will love you less, if you decide not to follow him.

Nothing You Can Do

There is nothing you can do to make God love you less.

There is nothing you can do to make God love you more.

Both of these statements are false.

Luke 11:28 KJV But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

John 8:51 KJV Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

John 14:21 KJV He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

More or Less

There is a popular doctrine making the rounds in churches and spreading like wildfire: You can’t do anything to make God love you less. Nor can you do anything to make God love you more.

A similar doctrine seen in a recent tweet is: The gift of JESUS has never been about earning and deserving. It has always been about Believing and Receiving.

The Truth:

Of course those going to Heaven will be the deserving. They loved the Lord and kept his Commandments and the Lord loved them more for it because they chose to walk in the light.

They believed and did not despise his sacrifice and reject his gift. Their belief included duty and obedience, repentance and confession, honor and respect. They received the gift of salvation with zeal and remembered Jesus died showing us to not sin.

Can you earn God’s love and favor. Of course you can. King David was a man after God’s own heart. Why, because King David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord.

More or Less

Another disappointing Wednesday night service of people preaching and teaching that we are no longer under the law.

However, Jesus said he came not to destroy the law but to fulfill and if you love me keep my Commandments. Did he need to rename all of them? The New Testament says keep the commandment you have heard from the beginning.

They (errant preachers) claim we are under love and not under the law, but I say if you truly love the Lord why not let him write all his Commandments on your heart.

I once argued with a preacher, why would you keep nine commandments and not all ten. I told him I wanted to do more for the Lord. He said keeping the Sabbath, which admittedly I’m not doing well at, was not doing more.

You be the Judge, is Ten more than Nine?
